Scouting Report
Hitting
Tyler Shepard generally is a very patient hitter, but he will swing at the first-short flat pitch if it’s left over the middle half the plate. He has as many personality ticks as Steve Guarini when he approaches the plate, but is quiet once he’s set in the batter’s box. Shepard is some what susceptible to pitches on the outer half, usually down and away, but he will make contact if it’s in the strike zone. Shepard concentrated on going up the middle, hammering pitches up and in especially. His power comes from his strong, quick wrists, so even on bad swings Shepard can hit the ball for extra bases. His contact rate went down some, but he can move a runner over when needed. Streakiness seems to be an unavoidable part of his game.
Base-Running & Defense
Although Tyler Shepard is a particularly speedy runner, and is very good at taking as many bases as the defense will allow him. High expectations may have played a role in Tyler Shepard’ outfield struggles. He’s a versatile outfielder who gets average jumps and his questionable routes exposes his weakness on grounders and liners that found SportsPark deep alleys. Shepard’ arm is above average and butt accurate.
