Running a '3 man'
Out Field Crew

The biggest misconception of running a '3 Man'

Sure it helps if you have it but that isn't the greatest need.

The strength of a 3 man is the Pitcher. And after that the communication between the mid and the CF. What you try to do in a 3 man OF is have the hitter only use one part of the field, and not give him the option to hit to all fields. This is where the mid and the pitcher are crucial.

The pitcher is pitching to a location where the hitter is forced to hit to one side of field. The mid gets notice from the pitcher as how he's pitching and sets up the defense so that if there's a ground ball, everyone is in location (pitcher backs up to the weak side of the mid so the holes in IF are covered).

The CF and mid are communicating to how the OF should be situated. The CF should be off center one way or another based on how the pitcher is pitching and how the mid is playing, you’re not gonna be playing in a straight line Behind the mid. You can have the strong side OF playing line since the gap is gonna be closer guarded by the CF. The weak side OF plays the other gap and leaves the line.

The pitcher should be pitching to strong side so the weak side foul line is not needed to be guarded so closely. (If a hitter hits there, well good for the hitter, it is a hitting game after all) So the end result is a pitcher having the hitter hit towards 3 IF and 2 OF, rather than 2 IF and 1 OF. With all this 5 strong IF - 3 strong OF. It is all for not though if your pitcher doesn't pitch to the side of the plate he is supposed to.

All your IF and OF need to be solid as each position will get hit at, so if you’re a team that decides, let’s just through the "worst" players out in right and 2nd base then playing 3 man is not for your team.

This is how I have been taught 3 man and as the CF for my team you can really see how things unfold play by play.
