2017  S e a s o n

In the long history of the WHAT? Men’s Softball franchise, which goes back to 2000 when they were called the Rebels, the 2017 team won the third-most regular season games in franchise history. Only the 2014 and 2013 team of Joe Yonke, Clark Collins and Ralph Lozano won more.

Shortstop Danny Morales was the most impressive offensive player on the team. Morales was neck and neck down the stretch pitcher Ralph Lozano for the squad lead in home runs. Morales set a career-high in hits (55) homers (15), slugging percentage (1.356) and OPS (.652).

Summer League Standing

The 2017 WHAT? season was the team’s 18th season in the Lake County leagues. They finished with a record 60–33, good enough to win the Wheeling Spring League, Wheeling Summer League championship and the Chicago Spring Tune-Up Tournament.

The Chicago Tournament was epic. WHAT? Sftbll defeated The Bagels club, 12-10 in the Championship game on Saturday April 23rd. On the following day, Sunday April 24th, they defeated Try Not to Suck squad, 14-13 in the Wheeling Sunday Night Spring League Championship. On Sunday night August 6th, the WHAT? Sftbll took their third Championship title when they defeated Generations club, 24-20 in 8-innings.

Most  Valuable  Player

Aaron Archibald earned the MVP award thanks to a brilliant stretch run. He was fine before the mid-season break with a solid 1.623 OPS but found a different gear with a .582 / .664 / .733 slash line and 22 extra base hits in 85 games.

In a deep year for MVP candidates in Lake County, Archibald was the clear standout. His individual performances led to a big season for both Squads, and he earned the right to have his name etched alongside those of the greatest players in Club history.

Rookie of the Year

In 39 league games, Jonny Yarnall collected 74 base hits, along with 15 base on balls. Scoring 56 runs and 37 RBI’s he produced a .611 / .575 / .552 slash line, for an impressive 1.127 OPS.

Made his team debut on May 22nd. against Fighting Aardvarks Club at SportsPark Field, D.. going ( 3 for 5, 3 Runs / RBI ).. Collected his first extra base hit on Monday June 10th. against Bolke Men’s Softball Squad, Gm. 1 at SportsPark Field, C.
