2013  S e a s o n

For a team that went from fourth place in 2012 to a Championship Series in 2013 was the most striking part of it, was how quickly it all came together.

There was a new left fielder in rookie sensation Austin Ward who created a winning atmosphere from the first day. And with free-agent pickups — from infielders Matt Tincher and Bert Ramirez to pitchers Jose Silva and James Creekmore — all played for winning outfits in 2012 and brought that mentality with them to the 2013 What? Softball squads. As for many who were returning — from Ralph Lozano to Joe Yonke to Clark Collins. That’s not to say Lozano numbers weren’t impressive (.629/.657/1.241) with 56 home runs and 202 RBI in 81 games—but Ralph Lozano is someone you have to watch on a daily basis to get an idea of how valuable he truly is.

The What? Softball squad fought and toughed their way through five games to get to the Pioneer Bowl Wisconsin tournament championship game. The magic ride didn't end until the What? squad took their fans and all of Lake County back to the ultimate joy: A Tournament championship.

After narrowly missing out on a title in 2012, the What? squad took care of business in five games this time, launching another breathtaking rally to tie the Bull Winkles in game four and then disposing of them with a eight-run outburst in the 3rd inning that was help with Economos Three-Run Home Run to secure a 8-2 win in Game 5 on Saturday night at Pioneer Bowl Field, B’, grabbing their first Tournament championship since 2012.

Most  Valuable  Player

If you’re starting to get a little déjà vu now, that’s only normal. If not, you probably lived under a rock during the famous MVP debates of 2013.

Just like last season, it came down to Thomas Wolfer traditional power stats—and, you know, being the most feared hitter on the planet—versus Ralph Lozano advanced-statistical prowess.

Although Wolfer didn’t have the Triple Crown narrative, his 2013 numbers were somehow a step above last year’s. He led his Squad in batting average (.683), second in on-base percentage (.685), fifth in extra base hits (41) and forth in BB (18), while he hit 41 extra base hits, crossed the plate 127 times and drove in 117.

Rookie of the Year

Jake Economos was sort of like the Thomas Wolfer of the world. That is, in the sense that his traditional numbers, although impressive across the board, were still overwhelming—.505/.560/.959, 21 extra base hits, 53 RBI and 42 runs scored.
But his value—hey, that’s the name of the award—to the WHAT? crew was crucial.

Economos made his team debut on May 20th. 2013 against Bombers club at SportsPark, D’ going ( 2 for 4, with 4 RBIs and 2 Runs ). Collected his first Triple on Saturday June 1st, 2013 vs. Mad Bogs softball, Gm 1. at Pionner Bowl, Wi. Tournament. Collected his first Home Run on Monday May 20th, 2013 vs. Bubba’s club, Gm 2. at SportsPark, D’.
