2000  S e a s o n

The 2000 WHAT? Rebel season was their first season as a Rec league team in Waukegan. It was also their inaugural season in Lake County.
The Rebels had a very balanced lineup, which was led by outfielders Brett McCollum and Jon Frailey, and was second in runs scored on Thursday Nights. They relied primarily on speed, as Travis Platt, Adam Miller, and Frailey finished 1–2–3 in extra base hits. The pitching staff was anchored by Jerry Vasquez, who went 9–11 with a 12.67 ERA.

The Rebel Club finished 9 – 11. They lost the pennant by six games.

2000 was a nice inaugural season for the Rebels, as new free agents Brett McCollum, Jon Frailey, and Tim Sotomayer joined the arrival of many of the young players from the farm. But none of the young pups made as big a splash as Adam Miller who burst onto the scene, hitting 25 extra base hits in his first 18 games (and perhaps skewing the hopes for his power numbers going forward). Travis Platt, who debuted briefly in 2000, made great contributions to the middle of the batting order. Scott Wilson came out of the gate wild but showed flashes of brilliance in his first 3 months in the big leagues.

To me, the story of the season was Jerry Vasquez. Coming off two injury plagued years and a stormy exit from Gurnee, the long-time 1B moved to C due to injury. Vasquez came out of the gate swinging, hitting .554 / .639 / .750 before the mid-season break. Vasquez really tailed off dramatically in the second half, but still provided many key hits, including two very memorable ones.

Most  Valuable  Player  &  Rookie of the Year Award Winner

As a three-time All-American, Adam Miller long ago erased any concerns about his height. Now it’s his stature within the game that’s talked about. The Rebel second baseman rose to softball’s highest individual level when he was chosen as the Lake County MVP and Rookie of the Year award winner.

Miller remained a picture of consistency, batting .577 in the first half and .594 in the second. He hit at least .580 with an 1.850 OPS in every month and went on a stunning tear in June, batting .685 for the month.

Adam Miller, 20, was the catalyst of softball’s most prolific offense, hitting a county-best .583 with 3 homers, 23 RBIs, 25 extra base hits and a 1.949 on-base plus slugging percentage.
