2019  S e a s o n

The 2019 WHAT? Softball season was the club’s 21st season in Lake County and 4th in the Mundelein Leagues. They began their season on January 18 against -Yeti Wi. Dolls Club in Chula Vista Tournament and finished the season in Mundelein with a Fall League Championship on October 15 against the Business Casual Squad.

At 30-30 overall summer league record, the WHAT? Softball were thoroughly outmatched in the postseason, losing 13 – 3 to the Strike 3# club in the semi-finals. That series was largely decided by poor player attendance and the fact that certain individuals were not available.

Most  Valuable  Player

Tommy Dubicki, 24, MVP award winner and a Gold Glover played multi fielding positions including pitcher, none of which posed much of an issue for him. Overall, he hit .600/.643/.968 with 15 homers, 15 doubles, 89 RBI, and 115 base hits.

The left center fielder represents the term “five-tool player” at its finest and while acquiring talented players this off-season is very important, they won’t find a player that represents this type of value based on potential talent and loyalty on the open market.

Suddenly, it was all over, and the black-jerseyed visitors were spilling and screaming out of every corner of Mundelein Park — from their dugout along the first base line, the parking lot, the expanse of outfield, all four corners of the complex — and converging upon the joyous pile of humanity forming near the center. Once the WHAT? Softball had no more giant mountains to climb, they took the small dirt hill of the pitcher’s mound, and they hugged and bounced.

With one more comeback win, at the end of a comeback season for the ages, the WHAT? Club were Mundelein Park District Fall League Champions. A 14-6 victory over the Business Casual Squad in Game 3 on Tuesday night sealed it, delivering the first softball Fall league title since Sturtevant, Wis. in 2002.

Rookie of the Year

Brent Fitzgerald, 16, didn’t join his squad until May, but in just 24 games, the 2B hit .548 with a .593 on-base percentage and .630 slugging percentage. His 1.067 OPS was the highest by a player 18 years or younger in Lake County modern era (since 2000).
