Scouting Report

Hitting

There is no safe way to pitch Phil Sims. On an outside pitch, he can step into the ball and drive it to the opposite field with frightening power. On an inside pitch, he either can pull it to left, or keep his hands inside the ball and rip it up the middle with equal force. When pitchers try to get him to chase balls outside the strike zone, he’ll simply watch them go by until the pitcher comes in to him or walks him. He also is deadly in the clutch, leading the team in 2008 with a .820 average with men in scoring position.

Base-Running & Defense

A great athlete with excellent speed, Phil Sims has used it well in 2008, with a career-high in extra base hits while also setting a career-high in home runs. A great baserunner who has learned to get great jumps on balls hit into the gap, Sims has also worked hard on becoming an All-Star third basemen with his exceptional cannon-like arm and pinpoint accuracy. Sims range is outstanding, and he makes more back hand stop or goes back on balls better than any infielder.
