Scouting Report

Hitting

A highly-profile 2008 signee for any softball club, James Huitt was one of the best bats available for the summer. A fine natural hitter with excellent power, Huitt shows very quick wrists and great natural hitting ability already, which means as he grows and fills out, he could become a certifiable monster. Driving the ball to any part of the field with aplomb, Huitt went through a stretch last summer when he bent his back too much, resulting in a longer swing. Low Short-Pitches are his Achilles’ heel, but utilizing that patience against them will bring those numbers up. He has surprising speed for a big guy, too.

Base-Running & Defense

James Huitt is an above average base runner who uses his good speed well. He combines good decisions with extreme aggressiveness to take extra bases and will break up a double play. He can steel a run for you when need be, so that threat cannot be ignored. Defensively, James Huitt is solid ball player. Other first base mans have modestly better range, but Huitt turns virtually every ball he touches into an out. He is extraordinarily focused and disciplined, and almost all of his throws hit other infielders squarely in the chest.
