Scouting Report

Hitting

It’s easy to underestimate Derek Hansen offensive impact because of his youth. Between his strength, energy and base running skills, he contributes in a variety of ways. Hansen is an aggressive first-pitch hitter who will often swing at any pitch. However, Hansen has become more adept at working counts. Hansen likes to line pitches to right center, and will stride through a short pitch and drive into right field. Hansen at times can develop an uppercut swing that too often leads to pop-ups instead of keeping the ball on the ground and using his speed. Hansen has good pop when saying within the strike-zone,and usually puts together a good at-bat in a clutch situations. His extra-base power will grow considerably as he becomes more mature that will eventually allow him to drive pitches into the gaps.

Base-Running & Defense

Some scouts wondered if Derek Hansen had the ability to play in the major league Softball, but he has proven his skeptics wrong. An aggressive base runner with surprising-above average speed, Hansen is not afraid to stretch a single into an extra base hit. He also does an excellent job of reading fielders, enabling him to score on miss played opportunities from the opponents. Defensively, Derek Hansen speed plays him well, with above-average range and the instincts to play anywhere in the outfield, if needed. His arm is already above-average and could be a plus one day. With all those tools, Hansen is thought of as one of the better outfielders prospects in the leagues.
