Scouting Report

Hitting

The lanky, long-armed Mitchell has terrific power to all fields. He seemingly can reach any thing, so pitchers try to keep him from extending his arms by tying him up inside.Even that approach has its drawbacks; those who miss by even a little might not geta second chance. Though he can draw walks, he isn’t tremendously patient. He simply swings through a lot of pitches, keeping at-bats going. Plus, he was pitched around more often than ever last year. He remains a power threat even with two strikes.

Base-Running & Defense

When healthy, Matt Mitchell combines good decisions with extreme aggressive base running who rarely runs into outs. A speedy hitter who should ignite the offense, he’snot yet been able to consistently handle that role. Matt Mitchell is one of the more underrated defensive Shortstop in softball. With his build, he won’t ever impress anyone as graceful, but he makes all the plays . . . and then some. He’s one of the best at handling throws in the dirt and corralling popups, and his throwing arm is so good that he serves as a cutoff man on certain plays.
