Scouting Report

Hitting

Elite; Jeff Johnson natural swing has a lift that can create backspin. Johnson highly competitive and will show his emotions on the field; good overall approach at the plate; knows the strike zone and appears to have good pitch recognition skills. Johnson shows impressive power to all fields and doesn’t need a sweet spot for the ball to leave the yard. Johnson can create the ‘sound’ torque created by hip rotation creates impressive bat speed. He has excellent hand-eye coordination that allows him to consistently square up on pitches. In-Side pitches can give him a little trouble at times, particularly deep throwers. Johnson has excellent secondary extension through the ball, its extreme. He’s going to hit plus bombs at the upper level at maturity. Overall, one will walk away extremely impressed with power potential and the type of contact he makes.

Base-Running & Defense

Blessed with excellent speed, Johnson is a formidable base runner. He can beat out an infield hit or leg out a triple with equal skill. He has the speed to take extra bases at will and is one of the club’s best base runners. Johnson quickness and agility translate into superior range afield. He led the softball leagues with the highest fielding percentage; many were on balls that other short stops never would have reached. Johnson is fundamentally sound mechanics;sets himself and throws from high/shoulder slot; accuracy is not a problem. Arm strength is very strong that allows him to make crisp throws even when on the run. A standout tool.
