Scouting Report

Hitting

Some scouts wondered if Matt Boley has the ability to play in the upper leagues, but he has proven his skeptics wrong. He has great concentration and plate discipline that contributes to his potent base hits. His line-drive stroke has natural loft, and he drives the ball to all fields with superb above-average punch. Matt Boley likes to jump on the first pitch in the strike zone; but he is at his best when he works the count into his favor. Boley can also be a dangerous hitter with runners in scoring position, equally likely to beat infielder with his speed or a run-scoring single. He sometimes gets long with his swing and will go through stretches when he is vulnerable to pop fly’s, but he is learning to make adjustments to avoid those funks.

Base-Running & Defense

There are few better base runners in softball than the hard driving Matt Boley. He combines good decisions with extreme aggressiveness to take extra base hits and is not afraid to stretch a double into a triple, a threat that cannot be ignored. He also does an excellent job of reading outfielders, enabling him to score on miss played opportunities. Defensively, Matt Boley remains to be a premier left fielder who positions himself well and reads the ball off the bat better than most. He continues to make fewer errors then most of his counterparts by covering significant amount of ground, making acrobatic catches from gap to gap. Boley turns virtually every ball he touches into outs. His arm is above average and quite. He is extraordinarily focused and disciplined and most of his throws hit infielders squarely in the chest. Some would consider young Matt Boley Gold Glove material.
