Scouting Report
Hitting
A patient hitter with a smooth stroke, Schumacher likes the ball out over the plate and is capable of reaching the fences from right-center to the left-field line. For a right handed hitter, Schumacher hangs in well against most deep throwers, although he’s been given more and more days off against them in recent seasons to help keep him fresh. He seemed to become more pull-conscious, which pitchers sometimes used to their advantage against him. He’s often excessively patient in his first at-bat of a game against a pitcher, but more aggressive and more effective in subsequent at-bats against them. He’s been prone to lengthy slumps over the last few seasons as sagging injuries have lingered at times.
Base-Running & Defense
A one-time Gold Glove winner, Schumacher had an off year in the field by his own standards. His 14 errors represented his highest total since 2000. He’s lost a step of range and some zip on his throws, but still is one of the better gloves at his position. Few are better at charging and bare-handing weak grounder. The best that can be said about his base running is that he’s well aware of his limitations.
