2009  S e a s o n

The Rebels Club continues to dominate the Monday Night League winning the division for the second straight season. They find themselves with the best record on Monday and Tuesday Nights and the best run differential in softball exactly halfway through the 2009 season. They won 38 and lost 6, and set a team record with a 5.9 extra base hits average per game.

They said all year that their goal was to get to the postseason and see what happened. But once they got there, their ultimate goal was left undone. While that might seem like an unfair standard, it is one that the Rebels have set for themselves in recent years.

Summer League Standing

In a twist of fate, Rebels Club clinched the Monday Night League and a high playoff berth by defeating TapOut softball club for first place. But, the clinching game came on August 10th, against Corporate Punishment squad at Dugdale Park, to a score of – 21 to 1 with outfielders Rick Garza went 3 for 4 , 3 RBIs and Nestor Toro went 4 for 4 , 2 HRs , 5 RBIs – Dennis Wuorenna went 3 for 3 , 3 Runs and was the winning pitcher. The victory guaranteed a division title, but it also ensured them a run at the All-City Waukegan Tournament series with those same upper level teams. The Rebels Club would go on to defeat Grand Appliances club in the opener, but then ran into a pair of hot hitting Yellow Jackets squad and A.V.P. team that would end up knocking them out of the 2009 playoffs.

Anastasias Softball represented the Lower Squad from 2009 until 2015.

Most  Valuable  Player

Nestor Toro was the unanimous choice for MVP, as he should have been. He was so much better than his contemporaries that the only possible reason to deny him the MVP would be pure spite, which in all fairness is something that voters have had in great supply for the young Nationals phenom for years.

Toro hit .618 in 46 games. He had 103 runs, 110 hits, 20 doubles, 14 triples, 9 home runs, 81 RBIs, six stolen bases, 43 extra base hits, a .706 on-base average and a 1.039 slugging percentage. The All-Star Gold Glover was named Athlete of the Year and Silver Slugger Award winner. Toro also took home the Player of the Month Award for June and July.

Rookie of the Year

Saul Molina got a lot of help from being a Rebel and having a massive preseason drama dedicated to whether or not he’d be on the club on Opening Day, but he also played more than well enough to deserve the Rookie of the Year award and it’s tough to ding him too much as “Lake County darling”.

Molina made his team debut on July 17th. 2008 against South Park Club at Belvidere South going ( 3 for 3, 3 RBIs). Collected his first Home Run on Thursday September 10th, 2008 vs Uncle Mikes Squad, Gm 2 at Belvidere North. Collected his first winning base hit on Saturday August 30th, 2014 at the Por La Gente Tournament, Gm 3 at Racine, WI. – Saul Molina hit .446 with a 1.079 OPS and 6 extra base hits in 61 plate appearances.
