Scouting Report

Hitting

Jeff Stein is a patient contact hitter with an excellent eye for balls and strikes. His smooth, level swing generates line drives to all fields with occasional pop down the line. Getting behind in the count isn’t a problem for him, as he is one of the better two-strike hitters around. Stein can hit-and-run, hit behind the runner, and led the majors in sacrifice flies.

Base-Running & Defense

Jeff Stein has average speed, but is a smart enough runner to take as many bases as the defense will allow. Easy going but in control behind the plate, fielders trust his judgment when throwing home for those close plays. His glove work is excellent, although he doesn’t have the range that many of the flashier glove men have, Stein is fundamentally sound, positions himself well and turns the pivot as well as any other catcher can.
