Scouting Report

Hitting

Matt Hermsen remains one of the most prolific hitters in the game, hitting well over league average. He has strong, quick hands that allow him to drive the ball. A perfectionist regarding his swing, Hermsen is prone to late slumps when his mechanics go slightly awry. A fine natural hitter with excellent power, Hermsen made great strides in his plate discipline last season, improving his on-base numbers from earlier in the season. Low short-pitches are his achilles’ heel, but utilizing that patience against them will bring those numbers up again. At the plate, Hermsen has quick wrists and a fast bat. He can drive the ball to any field with aplomb.

Base-Running & Defense

There are few better base runners in softball than the hard-driving Matt Hermsen. He combines good decisions with extreme aggressiveness to take extra bases and break up double plays. He has taken as many as 30 extra bases in a season, so that threat cannot be ignored. Defensively, Hermsen is a solid defender in the middle infield as he attacks grounders with reckless abandon and possesses a strong, accurate throwing arm. His range is above average, but he is sure handed and can turn the double play with consistency. These abilities garnered Hermsen a Gold Glove some day.
