Scouting Report

Hitting

The game’s preeminent contact hitter, Zach Smole waits on the ball so long it often seems he takes two steps up the line and then flicks the ball into left field on his way to first. He hits the ball mostly on the ground, collecting hits on grounders that find holes and beating out plenty that don’t. He was much more patient at the plate during the first half last year, but got away from that in the second half. One second-half change that was even more apparent was his tendency, seemingly by choice to drive the ball more often. He certainly is capable of doing so effectively, but in the past he had been choosier in picking his spots.

Base-Running & Defense

Zach Smole ranks among the game’s smartest base runners, and his intelligence shows on the bases. He makes great decisions and runs well with having exceptional speed. Smole will likely get bolder when he learns the opponents outfielders. He is known for his running and hitting, which makes his defensive contributions underrated. His speed and athleticism allow him to cover vast amounts of turf and put himself in position to attempt plays others would have no chance on. He has a decent arm, and can make it look better with good positioning and a quick release.
